Stormont Vail Health employees dedicate their lives to improving the health of their communities. From traditional patient-care careers like nursing and physical therapy to creative jobs like marketing or interior design, health care offers a broad range of specialized career opportunities — and those opportunities are only going to increase in the coming years as our population ages and new technologies change how the field of medicine is practiced.

How to Prepare for a Job in Health Care

Stormont Vail Health encourages young adults interested in a career in health care to:

  • Take as many math, science, computer and technology classes as you can in high school. It is also recommended that you try to volunteer or get a part-time job at a hospital or clinic in your community during high school to see if this is the career path for you.
  • Be aware that careers in health care change regularly as new technologies and treatments are invented. Many professionals enter a hospital system in one position and work their way up into a completely different area over the course of their career.
  • There are many opportunities to get into the health care field through on-the-job training. At Stormont Vail Health, for example, positions such as environmental service techs, nutrition services techs, phlebotomists, and patient safety monitors don’t require any professional training, and are a great way to get your foot in the door.
