Cade Fiske
Agricultural Education Instructor/FFA Advisor
As I was growing up, I knew my future career would be related to helping people. I wanted to be able to interact with others and have a direct impact on their lives. I considered everything from a banker to an orthodontist. At one point, the idea of becoming a teacher kept popping up in the back of my mind. I would always push the thought away, though, as I knew I was meant to do something else.
In high school, my agriculture teacher, who was also my FFA advisor, noticed a connection. She pointed out that my passion for helping people and my interest in agriculture could be joined together if I wanted the best of both worlds.
She was right. After high school, I attended college to receive a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, and today I’m an agricultural education instructor and FFA advisor for high school students. I teach six classes covering a variety of topics in agriculture, including animal science, horticulture and agricultural mechanics.
I love being able to engage with young minds and see their growth over time. It’s amazing to get a front-row seat to what the future of our society will look like. One of the best parts of my job is getting to take my students on trips where we take part in contests for FFA. During these outings, they can put into practice the lessons they’ve been taught throughout the year. It’s a very rewarding experience for both the students and me.
If you are unsure about the career path you want to take, consider the things you like to do and see how you can put them into practice. Maybe even share your interests with mentors or teachers in your life and see if they can offer some advice. I am so thankful that my high school agriculture teacher pieced together my two passions and shared with me what kind of paths I could pursue.
For those considering an education career route, it is not for the faint of heart, but it is probably one of the most rewarding jobs out there — especially if you are interested in helping others, shaping society and continuing education.
