Anthony Gorges

Sports and News Broadcaster

As a child, my dream job was always something related to sports. I was a major sports fan, and my aspirations rotated between broadcasting and roles involving game statistics. The excitement of being part of that world fueled my childhood dreams.

The interest in sports broadcasting remained a constant in my life. Attending various sports games, from high school to college and even Kansas City Chiefs games, solidified my passion for the industry. People around me often noted my quick recall of names and statistics, predicting a future in sports broadcasting for me. Listening to Mitch Holthus, the iconic voice of the Chiefs, passionately calling games further inspired my career choice.

Currently, I serve as a sports and news broadcaster at Eagle Radio, covering news and acting as the play-by-play broadcaster for Junction City High School sports. The thrill of providing commentary as it happens for every game, both home and away, is the most rewarding aspect of my job. One day, I’d love to broadcast collegiate and NFL football — it would be incredible to be the "voice" of a franchise.

To prepare for this role, I earned a degree from Kansas State University, and my training involved journalism classes at Butler Community College and K-State. An internship at Eagle during my junior year led to my current position. But before I went to college, I had on-the-job experiences like broadcasting various sports during my time at Garden Plain High School and working for student-run radio stations.

Reflecting on high school, the journalism and career exploration classes played crucial roles in shaping my path. The career exploration exposed me to potential careers, leading to a job shadow in Wichita, an internship and my commitment to the broadcasting industry.

For anyone interested in broadcasting, my advice is simple: Go for it! Despite discouragement, if you're passionate about broadcasting or journalism, gain as much experience as possible. As a recent graduate, I can attest that this career field is both enjoyable and ever-changing.
