James Miller
Operator/Laborer
As a kid, I thought I’d join the Army. Many of my family members served, and I felt like it was what I needed to do. But as I got older, I took a different path.
I was always interested in working with heavy equipment, so after some time in a different industry, I switched to the job I’m in now.
Today, I work as an operator/laborer at Bayer Construction. There is no set task in my role, so I do whatever is needed to get the job done. Some days I run heavy equipment, and other days I work with a shovel. I like that no two days are the same, and the work keeps me on my toes.
My training came from working directly on the job.
Looking ahead, my main goal is to make enough money to support my family and set aside enough for retirement. It’s about building a secure future and having time to enjoy life later on.
For anyone thinking about their career, I’d say don’t feel like you have to follow the traditional path and go to college to be successful. The trades are always hiring, and the pay is good. Plus, you build a real bond with your crew, and they become like family.
Living and working in the Manhattan area has been a good experience. The people here remind me of where I grew up in Ohio, and there is a real sense of community. Manhattan itself is a diverse place with a lot of different people and new things to see. It’s not uncommon to spot wildlife in places you wouldn’t expect. Overall, I would recommend working and living in this area.
