Jen Kesler

Second Grade Teacher

I always admired my teachers growing up and wanted to be just like them. I knew I wanted to work with kids. Although I struggled in school and had to work very hard, I’m a “helper” by nature, so I knew I wanted to support kids who struggled like I did.

I didn’t take any education-related classes in high school, but I would have loved an introduction to teaching course or opportunities to work in classrooms as a teacher aid. Many districts do both now, and I recommend aspiring teachers take advantage of those opportunities.

I attended Fort Hays State University and enrolled in their Teachers for Tomorrow program, which offered me tuition assistance and allowed me to work as a paraprofessional (a learning aide who helps a certified classroom teacher provide additional support to students who need it) while I went to school to earn my teaching credentials. I got my degree in elementary education with an emphasis in special education and taught special education for the first five years of my career.

Now I’m a second grade teacher in rural Kansas, and I serve on several leadership communities and as a mentor to new teachers. Relationships are at the center of my job, and I’m very passionate about making sure my students are loved, safe and encounter engaging lessons. I’m always looking for new ways to continue learning, leading and finding new opportunities to grow.

My favorite part of teaching is that each day presents different opportunities, challenges and experiences to shape future generations. Teaching is a heart job! It’s a chance to share your passions, explore new ideas and lead today’s youth.

If you are interested in becoming a teacher, I recommend finding ways to be involved with the youth in your community. Learn what age ranges you enjoy connecting with. Find a teaching mentor to shadow and spend as much time in their classroom as you can. So many avenues are available to students today to explore and learn more about careers and their passions.

Jen Kesler is a second grade teacher in Stockton, Kansas. She is a 2023-2024 Dane G. Hansen Foundation HirePaths Teacher Ambassador.
