William Drilon
HVAC Service Apprentice
It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do for a career. I worked at a few 9-5 jobs, but none of them were leading anywhere. Eventually, I got tired of the dead ends and decided to make a change.
I started attending Manhattan Area Technical College to get a little direction, which is where my passion for the HVAC industry began. I earned a certificate in air conditioning and refrigeration, then worked for a year to get more experience before applying for an apprenticeship through the Local 441 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union.
I was accepted into the apprenticeship program and now work for U.S. Engineering in Manhattan. The program will last for five years and when it finishes, I’ll be fully licensed and trained. A cool part about this apprenticeship is that I’m getting experience in the field, studying under more seasoned journeymen and getting a paycheck as I learn. Right now, I’m working on the commercial side of HVAC and discovering how to fix air conditioning problems in businesses and other properties.
The best part about my job is the people. Everyone is incredibly encouraging and supportive. Even when I make a mistake, they lift me up and help me take something positive from the experience. I’m really thankful for all of their help and teachings.
My ultimate career goal is to become one of the best HVAC technician out there. I take a lot of pride in my work and hope to perform as well as possible. I might be interested in transitioning to a management position or desk job within the industry someday, but right now I’m fully focused on my duties in the field.
I really wish I would have found this career path sooner, but it’s better late than never; I’m thrilled to be where I am now. My advice for anyone exploring career options is to keep a positive attitude. You’re the only one who can reach your goals, so keep at it! Lastly, I highly recommend looking into technical schools. A certificate, apprenticeship or on-the-job training can get you all kinds of places quickly. Great benefits, a rewarding career, exciting opportunities and more are awaiting anyone willing to work hard.
